How long does it take to charge an EV?

Short answer - it depends on the type of charger you are using and charging capacity of the car. Below are the types of chargers and typical charging speeds.

How do I find these Fast Chargers and Destination Chargers?

Go to Plugshare.com and click on Filters and tick all of the plug types and see what is available in your area. Orange chargers are Fast - 300 kms or more per hour of range, green one are slower, typically 50 to 80kms per hour of range added.

How much does it cost to fully charge an EV?

Again it depends. This time on whether you charge at home, on Fast Chargers or for free at Shopping Centres. A typical example of charging on off peak electricity at home, shows 100kms of range will cost $2.25. While if you shop around for an EV only, special off peak tariff it can be even cheaper - $3.75 for around 350kms of driving range.

Why buy an Electric Vehicle?

  • Lower emissions - you can charge from 100% green energy at your home and all the Fast Charging providers offset their emissions.

  • Lower Cost - it’s possible for your charging costs to be approximately $10 for around 400 kms distance.

  • More Convenient - no more service stations. Your car can be charged and ready to go each morning.

  • Enough Range -most of the cars sold since 2019 have range of 300 to 450 kms per charge, which is enough for most people.

What incentives are there to buy an EV in NSW?

  • Rebates - $3,000 rebates for the first 25,000 EVs sold under $68,750 from 1 September 2021.

  • Stamp Duty- EVs under $78,000 will no longer pay stamp duty from 1 September 2021.

  • Charging - More than $150 million will be allocated for highway fast charging, commuter corridor fast charging, destination charging, and household areas where off-street parking is limited.

    An additional $20 million will be allocated through grants for destination charging across designated ‘EV Tourist Routes’ in NSW (motels, restaurants, wineries, etc. More information here
